Glen Cove Named One of the Nation’s
100 Best Communities for Young People

2011 saw Glen Cove achieve national recognition as one of America’s Promise Alliance’s 100 Best Communities for Young People.  The competition recognizes communities across the country that focus on reducing high school dropout rates and providing service and support to their youth.  Glen Cove is the only community on Long Island to receive this distinguished award this year.

The review committee highlighted two of the Youth Bureau’s programs when it announced the award.  One program, the Community Action Using Student Empowerment Program (CAUSE), prepares high school students to be informed, responsible and involved citizens. Part of the curriculum requires students to organize fundraiser's for nonprofit entities such as Ronald McDonald House. Students are also taught civic responsibility by participating in mock debates and assisting in voter registration.

Another Youth Bureau program that assisted Glen Cove in receiving the award is Glen Cove After 3, a collaborative effort that ensures students have a safe place to learn outside of school by providing after-school and summer programming. Participants meet for three hours a day during the school year and all day during the summer to keep classroom skills sharp when class is not in session.
